Aurora Celebrates its First Law Intern
The Aurora Foundation is pleased to announce the completion of the internship supporting a veteran law student. First-year University of Virginia law student and Army veteran, Scott Phillips, graduated from an eight week internship at the global law firm of Reed Smith. His success at Reed Smith has paved the way for future veteran law students to intern there; Reed Smith will likely become a staple for the Aurora Internship Program.
Members of the Aurora staff, representatives from Reed Smith, and Dean Stephen Hopson of the UVa Law School gathered at the Tyson’s Corner Tower Club to recognize Scott’s graduation from the program. During his internship, Scott worked with attorneys in litigation, real estate, and financial sections. He completed projects ranging from fact checking and reviewing contracts to researching legal topics and writing memoranda. “The attorneys at Reed Smith have gone above and beyond to provide me with learning opportunities and chances to network,” Scott stated. As a first-year intern, he truly paved the way for future student veterans interested in obtaining a law degree. Reed Smith partner, Matt Sheldon, worked closely with Scott and was thoroughly impressed with his work ethic and maturity. “This internship went above and beyond our expectations,” said Sheldon. Such shining reviews have encouraged both parties to continue working together in the future to provide veteran law students with first year internships across the country.
In support of the Aurora Foundation’s mission, which is to enable student veterans to successfully graduate from college and enter the workforce, the Foundation assists student veterans with the identification of full-time, paid internship opportunities in various fields and industries. Student veterans have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in their areas of interest and gain insight into the civilian workforce. To date, the Aurora Foundation has graduated 17 interns across a variety of industries, including National Security, Finance/Banking, Law, IT, and Marketing.
