Ritz Carlton Opens Internship for Student Veterans with Aurora Foundation

George Putnam was Aurora’s first student veteran intern to work in the hospitality industry.  This internship was important to George because it combined his experience in military security with the technological aspect of Loss Prevention.  The Director of Loss Prevention, Mr. Tom Sweatt, worked with George to teach him the ins and outs of the Ritz Carlton at Tyson’s Corner, as well as ensure George represented the Ritz and their trademark Gold Standard of customer service.  At the end of his internship, Mr. Sweatt had people from the other 23 departments asking him for interns like George to work with them.  George noted that his experience overseas as an MP translated well into his internship in Loss Prevention.  “As an MP, you’re trained to look for details, the little things that indicate something small is out of place.  That’s exactly what needed to be done at the Ritz Carlton.”  As a former Marine himself, Mr. Sweatt understood the importance of giving 110% to any task that comes along. He recognized these qualities in George and saw them as an ideal match  of the Ritz Carlton’s standards.  It appears that George has helped pave the way for veterans to intern with the Ritz Carlton in the future.   George is one such success story, and Mr. Sweatt hopes for there to be many more.

In support of the Aurora Foundation’s mission, which is to enable student veterans to successfully graduate from college and enter the workforce, the Foundation assists student veterans with the identification of full-time, paid internship opportunities in various fields and industries. Student veterans have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in their areas of interest and gain insight into the civilian workforce. To date, the Aurora Foundation has graduated 17 interns across a variety of industries, including National Security, Finance/Banking, Law, IT, and Marketing.  To learn how you can apply for an internship or sponsor one of our student veterans, please contact Ellen Hembree, Internship Coordinator at Ellen.Baumgardner@Aurora4vets.org.
